Kendal Mint Cake – The Original Energy Bar

Quiggin's Kendal Mint Cake ShopKendal Mint Cake has a long history that dates back to the 1800’s when it was first discovered!

This treat, which folklore has it was discovered by accident, has become synonymous with outdoor adventure because of its energy giving properties.

Quiggin’s have been at the forefront of Kendal mint cake production since its early days with the business passing between 6 generations to date! The original mint cake recipe has remained much the same but other products have been developed to complement and add to a range of confectionery around the minty treat.

We are one of the oldest and most experienced producers of this treat, having a long history producing quality confectionery since 1840, and it’s been our mission to offer the perfect Kendal mint cake.

The Origin of Quiggin’s Kendal Mint Cake

It isn’t easy to talk about the history of mints and confections without mentioning the Quiggin’s brand. The Quiggin’s family started producing confectionery in the Isle of Man in 1840. Although we had been producing confectionery for decades, our Kendal Mint Cake was born when Daniel Quiggin, one of William Quiggin’s four sons, moved to Kendal in 1872.

Quiggin’s has met various milestones since the first production of the Kendal Mint Cake. We’re the first company to introduce the Kendal Mint Cake in chocolate and other hand-crafted fudge and confectioneries. This has contributed to the increase in demand for Quiggin’s treats in various countries, including China, Australia, Hong Kong, New-Zealand, the US, and other European countries.

We also continue to build on the experience and tradition passed from our leading pioneer, Mr. William Quiggin.

Kendal Mint Cake Tins - Energy BarsThe Special Quiggin’s Recipe

We have put a lot of effort into maintaining the same formula and recipe for creating the Kendal Mint Cake. Although there have been a few changes over the years, the main aim is to improve the quality without breaking the old-time honoured process.

We still use large copper pans when boiling the sugar solution, just like in the old days. This has gone a long way in ensuring that the experience gained over the years is passed to generations. It’s one of the reasons Quiggin’s Kendal Mint Cake is considered the original energy bar.

A Variety of Mint Cake Flavours

It’s not only enjoyed as a treat but also as a great source of energy when engaging in endurance activities. It’s especially popular among the hill walking and mountaineering community and is also used by runners and cyclists to provide more energy and enhance endurance.

Quiggin’s produces many mint cake flavours, including:

  • White Kendal Mint Cake – It’s considered the original energy bar because it was among the first in the market and it was being produced long before the modern concept of an energy bar was even conceived! The White Kendal Mint Cake is made using glucose, sugar, peppermint oils, fondant, and a small amount of salt. It’s also flavoured with peppermint to make it tastier.
  • Brown Kendal Mint Cake – Quiggin’s introduced this mint soon after discovering the White Kendal Mint Cake. It uses the same ingredients and formula as the white version but contains soft light brown sugar instead of white granulated sugar. The production process involves boiling the ingredients in an open copper pan and pouring the mixture into rubber moulds. The mixture is left to cool overnight before going through the packaging process. This tasty treat is a high energy source, popular among endurance athletes.
  • Chocolate Kendal Mint Cake – If you are a chocolate lover, this is the best flavour for you. The Quiggin’s Chocolate Coated Mint was developed four decades ago. It is made using a rich dark Belgian Chocolate to bring out its great taste. It’s our unique Kendal Mint Cake that is exclusively produced by Quiggin’s.

Quiggin’s also creates beautiful gift boxes with a full range of mint cakes. You can use these gift boxes to send to your loved ones for special occasions.

Celebrating 30 Years Since “The Impossible Journey”

Quiggin’s is celebrating 30 years since they sponsored a team to attempt the Trans-Antarctica expedition. We offered a free supply of our Kendal Mint Cake to energise the participants. This historic event involved crossing Antarctica on foot. It took 220 days for the participants to cover 3,741 kilometres of hostile conditions and inhospitable terrain.
