Taking in the views with Kendal Mint Cake
Perfect as a base when exploring the South Lakes, Kendal offers a range of beautiful walks for all abilities. It’s also the perfect place to stock up on Kendal Mint Cake before you set off. Here are some of our favourite walks around Kendal.
Scouts Scar
West of Kendal, Scouts Scar offers one of the most spectacular views of the Southern Lakes. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Heysham power station and sometimes even Blackpool Tower!
Although it is a short steep walk, it’s an accessible hike and is part of the ‘miles without stiles’ walks recommended by https://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/visiting/things-to-do/walking/mileswithoutstiles
Hugill Fell and Reston Scar
Between Kendal and Windermere, the village of Staveley is where you will begin this walk. You can easily visit both Hugill Fell and Reston Scar on this excursion which is a nice and easy three miles. Both offer fantastic views. On the way down, try to pop into St James’ Church in Staveley. Built in the 18th century to replace the original 14th century church, it’s East window is beautiful.
Designed by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, it has clearly been influenced by the Arts and Craft movement and is well worth a visit. You can find more information about this walk here https://www.walklakes.co.uk/walk_226.html
Burneside
If you are looking for more of a challenge, Burnside to Windermere is the perfect walk. It follows the Dales Way and incorporates a beautiful riverside stroll along the River Kent. You will definitely need to replenish energy levels on this 11-mile walk so make sure you have plenty of Quiggin’s Mint Cake to keep you energised.
The Dales Way actually starts in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and runs for 80 miles to Bowness-on-Windermere in Cumbria. You can find out more about the Dales Way here http://www.dalesway.org/route.html
Kentmere Pike
For a more remote walk, try the Kentmere horseshoe walk. This walk made it into Lancashire Life’s Top 5 Walks around Kendal https://www.lancashirelife.co.uk/out-about/walks/lake-district-walk-kentmere-1-3764238 and we completely agree that it is well-worth doing while you are here. It starts and finishes in the village of Kentmere, 9 miles north of Kendal, and can be completed in a day.
It is just over 12 miles, so this isn’t a walk for the faint-hearted, but for those who love a challenging fell walk, it’s perfect. To make sure you meet that challenge, make sure there is a tin of Kendal Mint Cake in your rucksack.
Whitbarrow Scar and Lord’s Seat
Whitbarrow Scar is a limestone escarpment which is unusual as most of the rock in the Lakes is volcanic. Over thousands of years, water has eroded the rock forming clints and grikes which is classic of limestone pavement. This makes the area feel more like the Yorkshire Dales which is known for its limestone. Beginning at Mill Side, this walk goes via the Lord’s Seat, which boasts impressive panoramic views.
You will also pass Witherslack Hall and walk through woodland on your way back to Mill Side. At almost 7 miles, it’s not the most challenging walk we recommend, but you will still need plenty of energy for those ascents.
