Love is in the air this month. Valentine’s Day is synonymous with romance and Quiggin’s is busy packing boxes of chocolate-covered Kendal Mint Cake ready to be sent as Valentine’s gifts.

But this romantic Day’s origins are not based originally on sharing loving and sentimental messages.

Why do we have Valentine’s Day?

There are a few legends about St Valentine and who he was. Two main stories both involve an individual named Valentine. These men lived in the Roman Empire during the third century, and some historians believe they could be the same person.

One story talks of a man called Valentine killed for helping Christians escape prison. It is said, while he was in prison, he signed a letter ‘from your Valentine’ essentially sending the first Valentine’s note.

Another legend talks of a priest, Valentine, who ignored the Emperor’s ban on young men getting married. He secretly married many young couples which in turn prevented these men from becoming soldiers. Enraged by the disobedience, the Emperor ordered Valentine’s execution.

Whichever story is true, both Valentine’s suffered martyrdom, and the Christian Church made Valentine a saint.

It wasn’t until the 14th century, St Valentine’s Day became a festival dedicated to romance and people started sending Valentine’s messages.

A Victorian Valentine

It was 1840 – the same year Quiggin’s was established – when sending Valentine’s Day cards became popular. When penny postage and envelopes were introduced that year, the Victorians discovered a love for exchanging cards. Their cards were elaborately made with lace and had sentimental messages and poems written inside.

They became so popular during this era that postal workers were given meal allowances to keep them going through this busy delivery period!

It was also around this time ‘eating chocolate’ was improved, and its popularity rose. As a result, Britain saw the emergence of great confectioners such as Quiggin’s. Chocolate boxes were lavishly decorated and shaped like hearts which encouraged people to buy chocolate and send cards as Valentine’s gifts.

What are you sending this year?

We know we’re biased, but we believe anything from our online shop would make a great Valentine’s gift. However, we have narrowed it down to a few to help you choose.

Kendal Mint Cake Gift Boxes

Our Kendal Mint Cake gift boxes are beautifully decorated and are the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day. With a selection of gift boxes to choose from, you’ll find a perfect one to send to someone you love. We recommend the Chocolate Covered Disc Box or Chocolate Hexagonal Gift Box. Both are filled with scrumptious mint cake enrobed in delicious Belgian chocolate. It’s a Cumbrian twist on a traditional Valentine’s present.

Chocolate Hearts

Another chocolate-based gift are our chocolate hearts. With a choice of white or milk chocolate, these hearts are the perfect gifts for the kids, so they don’t feel too left out on 14th February. Obviously, they are popular with adults too, and if you’re not into exchanging gifts, a love heart chocolate is a nice alternative.

Sweet Jars

If chocolate isn’t your partners Valentine’s choice, why not go for sweets instead? We cram our pick & mix jars full of traditional sweets, all of which are vegan-friendly. You can also personalise the label for a little extra touch.

Gift Hampers

Finally, our gift hampers are the perfect, thoughtful gift. There are so many people in your life that you love, and the current situation means you can’t spend quality time with them. But you can use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to send them a present to show that you are thinking of them. Our gift hampers come with a range of Quiggin’s best-sellers and come in two different sizes.

Think Outside the Chocolate Box

We know chocolates are always a well-received gift, but we like to do things a bit differently at Quiggin’s. Our range of chocolate-covered mint cake and other confectionery is loved worldwide, and we know people would be thrilled to have some of our sweet treats delivered to their door.
