Why not explore the Lakes in a different way?

We all know that Kendal Mint Cake is the perfect energy bar. It allows you to refuel and can help you push on. We talk a lot about walking and hiking, so today, we thought we’d go off-piste and focus on some of the more unusual outdoor sports you can try in the Lake District.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Yes, that’s right. You don’t have to jet off to France or Italy to be able to snow. Obviously, it’s England, and the ski season is a little shorter and more unreliable. Still, the Lake District has 2 options for real outdoor skiing.

One hour north of Kendal, next to Helvellyn, is Raise, where The Lake District Ski Club operates. Depending on the conditions, there can be 9 runs available to skiers and snowboarders.

A bit further north is Yad Moss which boasts England’s longest ski lift. During good years, you may get up to 40 days of skiing.

Both places are unsuitable for novices. There are no lessons or equipment to hire. Plus, the snow may not come. So, if you want to try skiing or practise your skills, you can always visit Kendal Snowsport Club. Here you can book lessons, hire equipment and ski or snowboard all year round.

Both skiing and snowboarding are great exercise. You use your entire body and can often feel fatigued afterwards. It’s no wonder. You actually burn a lot of calories while shooting off down that slope. Plus, if you fall over a lot, you’re using more energy to get back up again!

Canoeing and Kayaking

These sports may look more sedate, but they help your body improves its strength, flexibility and aerobic fitness. Don’t be fooled. You’ll work up a sweat.

The Lakeland Canoe Club offers indoor and outdoor canoe sessions. There are also plenty of opportunities to kayak both in the lakes and the sea.

But, what is the difference between a kayak and a canoe?

A canoe is an open boat that usually has 2-3 seats. You can carry things in it (like your lunch and your mint cake), and you use a single-bladed paddle. A kayak is small and narrow. It’s got a covered deck and is much lighter than a canoe. You use a double-bladed paddle with a kayak.

Whichever you choose, you’ll get a good workout while exploring some of the beautiful scenery we have on our doorstep.

Gorge Walking and Canyoning

With these outdoor activities, you’ll get to try:

  • River walking
  • Low-level mountain walking
  • Low-level unassisted climbing
  • River crossing
  • Scrambling
  • Jumps into plunge pools
  • Wild swimming

There are plenty of places to try gorge walking, which is less challenging than canyoning. When you go canyoning, expect a more remote environment and a tougher terrain. There’ll be higher climbs and scrambles and high jumps into the water. Gorge walking is the same but more accessible. You’ll be able to opt out of certain climbs and jumps.

Whether you choose the tough or the less challenging route, you’ll definitely still be using your entire body. It’s a physical activity, and you’ll need calories to keep going. We recommend some Kendal Mint Cake when it’s time for a pit stop.

Have the energy to explore

Yes, the Lake District provides plenty of beautiful walks and stunning scenery. But there are different ways to explore the fantastic countryside. If you are feeling more adventurous, why not give one of these outdoor activities a try. You might find a new hobby.

No matter how you use your time in the Lakes, you need to keep your energy levels high, and that’s where our mint cake helps. Full of glucose, a bar of mint cake will give you that burst of energy you need to climb, paddle, ski, and jump into the next adventure.
