Sweets and Treats Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans

The 1st of October is world vegetarian day, and the event kicks off an entire month, raising awareness about vegetarianism.

So why would Quiggin’s write a blog about being vegetarian? We don’t produce fruit and veg. But we do make Kendal Mint Cake which is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. So if you’re thinking of maybe exploring a vegetarian diet this month, there’s no need to fret. Quiggin’s Kendal mint Cake is still allowed.

Why go vegetarian?

It’s good for your health

Any diet that reduces red meat intake and puts more veg on your plate is a good thing. You’re lowering your cholesterol, increasing your fibre intake and eating more complex carbohydrates. Not only will you feel healthier, but you’ll also have loads more energy to tackle those high mountains and long walks you love.

It’s good for the planet

We’ve seen forest fires raging around this world this year. The planet is getting hotter. By choosing a vegetarian diet, you can reduce carbon emissions which will then help reduce global warming.

You’ll also help reduce water consumption. The Vegetarian Society says an 8oz chicken breast takes over 542 litres of water to produce. That’s a lot of water for a small amount of food. A vegetarian diet doesn’t require that much water, and that can only be a good thing for our planet.

Is it difficult to become a vegetarian?

Not really. You just have to understand how food works and what your body needs. A lot of you reading this already think about your diets. You might carb-load the day before heading out on a long hike. You might eat more protein after a particular tiresome run to help with muscle repair. You probably all take Kendal Mint Cake (or jelly babies) with you when you’re out exercising so you can get an instant boost of energy when you need it.

To be vegetarian, all you need to do is stop eating meat and animal products.

Even if you opt for a few vegetarian meals a week, you’ll start seeing the benefits. You’ll feel healthier, and your food shop will be cheaper too.

What about hidden ingredients?

This is where you’ll need to do a bit of research. Gravy may contain meat products. Crisps may contain whey powder. And many sweets are made with gelatine – a gelling agent derived from animals. It may feel like an extra hassle to check the ingredients, but you’ll soon start to understand what is suitable for vegetarians and what isn’t.

All our products in our online shop have a clear list of ingredients, making it easy to see what you’re eating. We also have a dedicated page in the shop for vegan and vegetarian confectionery, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

What about chocolate?

Chocolate comes from a plant, so technically, it’s suitable for vegetarians and vegans. You just have to check what’s been added. We’re happy to say that our chocolate-enrobed Kendal mint cake is definitely suitable for vegetarians, so you won’t have to give up chocolate if you do decide to go vegetarian.

Why not start small and make some minor changes to your diet this month? Your first change could include choosing Kendal Mint cake as your sweet of choice. Head over to our online shop to grab yourself a few bars.
