Quiggin’s Kendal Mint Cake

Our Kendal Mint Cake is vegan-friendly, so we couldn’t let November pass without mentioning World Vegan month. A whole month dedicated to celebrating the vegan diet and raising awareness of how becoming vegan can help the planet.

There’s been a lot of talk in the press about eating less meat. Prince Charles says he has two meat-free days a week, and there have been calls on the Government to set higher taxes on meat. Whether that will actually happen, it’s hard to say. But, what we do know is reducing meat consumption is one way we can all contribute to tackling climate change.

Why should I consider going vegan?

It helps the planet

People eating meat and animal products is contributing to global warming, deforestation and water scarcity. According to the Vegan Society, world meat production has quadrupled since the 1960s, and it’s set to increase even more. This worrying trend means we need more animals and more crops to feed them. It’s putting a huge strain on our planet and its resources.

A diet with fewer animal products also helps reduce the world’s water requirements. It requires three times more water to feed a meat-eater compared to a vegan. That’s water used on crops used to feed animals. In a world where 1.1 billion people lack access to water, we should be aiming to collectively use less, not more.

It will improve your health

Being vegan is also good for your health. Studies have shown it can reduce BMI, lower blood pressure and cholesterol and reduce the chances of getting heart disease or type 2 diabetes.

People worry that they won’t get all the vitamins they need if they eat a completely meat-free diet. This just isn’t the case. When you become vegan, you become much more aware of what you are eating. You become more knowledgeable about the foods that are nutritious, and your diet can actually improve.

Is going vegan difficult?

It’s not as difficult as you may think. It’s not recommended that you completely change your diet in one go. In fact, for a lot of people, just making small changes to their diet over a few weeks makes the switch easier to stick to.

Our top tips

  • Start by changing something simple, like cow’s milk to almond milk.
  • Try having one vegan meal a day, to begin with
  • Meal plan and search for vegan recipes you’ll love
  • Try new food
  • Ask for help if you’re unsure about anything
  • Find a treat you can enjoy so you don’t feel like you’re missing out
