Easter Gifts
As April approaches, we can’t help but start planning for Easter. It is one of our favourite celebrations. Family meals, kids games and lots and lots of chocolate and sweets. What’s not to love?
Being the oldest manufacturer of Kendal Mint Cake, we’re also fascinated with traditions, and Easter certainly has many. So we thought we would explore some of the Eater traditions we all know and love here while helping you find some Easter gifts.
Hot Cross Buns
Okay, so we know they’re now available all year round. But traditionally, hot cross buns were eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent. Originally called the Alban bun, these sweet spiced bread buns were invented by Thomas Radcliffe, a medieval monk. He made them to give out to locals on Good Friday.
Now, these buns are enjoyed by people all around the country.
We don’t make hot cross buns. But, we do have Hot Cross Bunnies, our very own chocolate bunnies that any kid (or adult) will love.
The Easter Bunny
That leads us nicely into our second Easter tradition: The Easter Bunny. Why has this animal become synonymous with handing out eggs at Easter?
The rabbit has always been a symbol of spring. The pagans honoured the goddess of fertility and spring, whose symbol was supposedly a rabbit.
But, the Easter bunny we know today originates from America. In the 1700s, German immigrants brought their egg-laying hare called ‘Osterhase’ over to America. This hare would lay colourful eggs for good children. Kids would make nests for Osterhase so he could leave his eggs.
This tradition spread across America and then was adopted by other countries, including ours. So that’s why we now have the Easter bunny.
Luckily for us, chocolate became a popular gift to give at Easter, so why not get some chocolate bunnies this Easter? Choose from milk chocolate or white chocolate and enjoy watching the kids tuck in. (Other chocolate animals are available)
Easter Egg Hunt
This tradition is probably our favourite. The Easter hunt originates again from Germany and dates back to the 16th century. It’s believed that Protestant reformer Martin Luther organised egg hunts for his congregation.
Queen Victoria also enjoyed Easter egg huts arranged by her German-born mother. Victoria and Albert continued the tradition with their own children.
These days parents and grandparents hide chocolates around their garden and watch children racing around trying to find as many as they can.
If you’re looking for something lovely to hide as part of your Easter hunt, we have gorgeous chocolate hearts. They come in boxes of 45, so you’ll have plenty and are available in white and milk chocolate.
Lent
Lent is the 6 week period before Easter where traditionally, people give up meat, fish, eggs and fat. Pancake day marks the start of Lent as it allowed for people to eat up these things before lent began.
These days, people tend to give up luxury items such as chocolate, biscuits or alcohol. It’s perhaps not quite the same, but it still makes the Easter celebrations something to look forward to.
Why not send a hamper to a loved one this year so they can enjoy a range of treats over the Easter weekend. Our hampers are filled to the brim with Kendal mint cake, fudge, chocolate-covered marzipan, and so much more. Our hampers come in two different sizes and can be delivered directly to the recipient.
