Go Camping and Enjoy The Outdoors This Year

June is national camping month, so it’s the perfect time to explore the British scenery with friends and family.

A Brief Camping History

Thomas Hiram Hading is considered the founder of modern camping. He travelled across the United States with his parents and loved camping out under the stars.

The first commercial camping ground was established in Douglas on the Isle of Man, where Quiggin’s was also first launched.

Camping in the Lakes

Camping in the Lakes is extremely popular. Imagine waking up to a view of Lake Windermere or being able to quickly walk into Keswick to buy a locally produced breakfast.

You can enjoy camping in the Lake District in many different ways, so we have put together a small guide for anyone thinking of coming to visit.

Beginner’s Camping

For those new to camping, we recommend you try a fully stocked campsite. You’ll have access to a full range of amenities making your first trip a little bit easier. Lots of the larger campsites in the Lakes have swimming pools, entertainment and shops. They are perfect for family camping trips.

Wild Camping

Wild camping is actually not permitted anywhere in the Lake District. You can get permission from local landowners or choose from one of the many remote campsites situated across the Lakes. You’ll still get the spectacular views and remoteness, and you’ll also have toilets and fresh water on tap.

If you do manage to get permission from a private landowner to camp on their land, please remember to:

  • Take away all litter
  • Don’t light a fire
  • Only stay for one night
  • Only camp with one or two tents
  • Take everything away with you
  • Choose dry pitches only

Glamping

Glamping provides a different camping activity for those looking for a little more luxury. In the Lakes, you may find a lakeside tipi or a yurt in the fells. Glamping pods are the perfect choice for the cooler months of the year. You may also find shepherd’s huts and safari tents offering unique camping experiences.

What to take Camping

This list can be pretty extensive, so we have just provided you with the items you shouldn’t forget to pack.

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Camping mat and pillow
  • Water bottle or flask
  • Food
  • Stive and cookware
  • Camping furniture
  • Head torch
  • Mallet
  • Repair kit
  • First aid kit
  • Games and activities
  • Kendal Mint Cake

Okay, so you don’t really need to take Kendal Mint Cake with you, but why wouldn’t you? The original energy bar provides you with the energy boost you need to explore the fells and climb the peaks around the Lake District. It’s also the perfect treat to enjoy around the campfire (if you’re allowed to have one).

Book Ahead

We always recommend booking a campsite before setting off. The Lake District is popular all year round, and campsites get booked up pretty quickly.

You can also buy your Quiggin’s Kendal mint cake before you set off via our online shop. However, if you forget, there is no need to worry.

You’ll be able to find plenty of shops and cafes around the lakes that sell our delicious, energy-boosting treats. Plus, you’ll be able to take some home with you as a gift for friends and family.
