The Origins of Father’s Day
Father’s Day was traditionally a Catholic festival held on 19th March, Saint Joseph’s Day. Predominantly Catholic countries such as Spain and Italy mark this day with a celebration and combine it with Father’s Day.
Here in the UK, we celebrate Father’s Day on the same day as the USA, where the first official Father’s Day began.
Initially, the day was ridiculed. People believed there were already too many celebration days. But, it appears people wanted to celebrate their Dads and father figures, and within 30 years, it had become a recognised day. It became a national holiday in the USA in 1972.
